Focus on Bottom Line for Efficiency

When I worked in corporate business for 13 years, I was driven by whatever came into my inbox. I had unknowingly built a glass ceiling on my productivity. I had accepted that my email inbox drove my efficiency, and I believed that the quicker and better I answered my emails, the more productive I was.

I could not have been more wrong.

This was because no matter how hard I fought with my inbox, my productivity did not change. The only loser was me. While I sometimes won the battle and got my inbox to zero, most of the time I didn’t win, and I felt stressed and overwhelmed.

The key to business efficiency is accepting that time management is driven by answering ‘Why are you on the payroll?’ Easy to ask, hard to answer. Many people believe the answer is to manage people, deal with clients, emails, meetings, etc. It is not. For businesses, it is about ultimately making a difference to the bottom line. Finding how you make a difference to that bottom line is crucial. If you work in sales or buying, it’s easier. In HR, it’s a little harder but still possible – maybe by improving the employee satisfaction index. Find it, we must.

Identifying the few reasons you are really paid is the key, and then ensuring that at least 80% of what you do works towards improving those reasons. This is how you increase business efficiency.

Not by chopping the trees down quicker, but by knowing that you are in the right forest.
