Many of our customers on Pro and Business plans rely on Domain Rating to prioritize which questions to answer. Domain Rating, a metric from Ahrefs, measures the strength of a website’s backlink profile on a 100-point scale.

Starting today, Featured will transition from using Ahrefs “Domain Rating” to “Domain Authority” from Moz. Domain Authority is also a 100-point scale metric, designed to predict how likely a website is to rank in search engine results.

Here’s why we’re making the change.

For the past three years, our team has manually updated Domain Rating for each publication on Featured. As our platform has grown to include over 1,000 publications, this manual process has become unsustainable.

To streamline and scale, we needed an API integration to automatically update this metric in real-time and to account for fluctuations. While Ahrefs offers an API, it requires an Enterprise Plan costing approximately $15,000 annually—an expense we can’t justify.

In contrast, Moz offers a pay-as-you-go API, making it a scalable and cost-effective solution. This aligns with our mission to keep Featured affordable and accessible for everyone to share their expertise.

What this means for you

Switching to Moz’s Domain Authority not only helps us manage costs but also opens up opportunities to integrate additional metrics from Moz in the future. These tools can further guide your decision-making when prioritizing questions to answer on Featured.

“Moz has been a trusted leader in SEO for over 20 years. We build data products like Domain Authority and Brand Authority that have become industry standards for SEOs who need to deliver business results,” says Ethan Hays, General Manager of Moz.

“These data products are powered by Moz Data. Moz Data is the result of deep learning across our proprietary databases of the structure of the Internet (links), and consumer interest (queries), two of the largest corpuses of their kind in the world. We build data products on top of these curated datasets because we’re committed to helping marketers deliver greater business impact. Moz Data helps marketers make confident, data-driven decisions in the rapidly changing search ecosystem. Our tools—spanning keyword research, backlink analysis, and competitor insights—are designed to empower businesses of all sizes to achieve success in generative AI and search engines.”
