This interview is with Silvia Lupone, Owner, Stingray Villa.

What inspired you to transition into the luxury Caribbean hospitality industry, and how did you build your expertise in creating exceptional villa getaways?

I did not wake up one morning and say, “I’m entering the world of luxury Caribbean hospitality.” Rather, it has been a longer process—a gradual pull toward the island lifestyle.

The first time I spent quality time in Cozumel, I could feel it: the stillness of the air, the coral reef just offshore, and the way the sun would turn gold at 5 PM every day, as if everything were melting away. I think that is why I thought to myself that this is the type of place where people do not simply come to visit; they reset.

That feeling lingered for years.

When I finally became the owner of Stingray Villa, I had no desire to own yet another rental property. I wanted to create a true luxury Caribbean vacation experience—an experience that would be private, intentional, and directly connected to the land on which it sat.

Building My Expertise: Honestly? Through hard work.

I read all guest comments obsessively. I tracked guest booking history, seasonal trends, and the length of guest stays. I studied the operational aspects of running the villa, including hiring and training staff, maintaining the property, dealing with vendors, and learning how to maintain a sustainable, reef-friendly property.

However, my greatest education came from listening to guests’ experiences during their stay. Guests told me what made their experience at Stingray Villa special. More often than not, it was never marble floors. What guests valued most were:

  • Stress-free airport transfers to the villa.
  • Staff members who remembered their coffee preferences (and even brought them coffee in the mornings).
  • Perfect timing for sunset cocktails, so that they could view the sunset while sipping their drink.
  • Peaceful and quiet ocean views that allowed for complete relaxation.

Creating exceptional luxury villa vacations is truly a matter of choreographing each and every detail. Each guest interaction is important.

As time passes, your instincts will grow stronger. You will know when to take action and when to allow the guest to have space. Additionally, you will realize that luxury is not about being loud. Luxury is about creating an environment that is peaceful, specific, and ultimately human.

This is the aspect of this journey that inspires me the most.

When guests arrive at a Caribbean villa for the first time, what are the top three amenities or touches that consistently create that 'wow' moment, and how can other villa owners prioritize these elements?

When visitors enter Stingray Villa for the very first time, I wait to see how they react. Every single guest pauses; they take a breath. That moment says everything I need to know regarding whether or not we have successfully delivered on our promise of a WOW experience.

Years of working within the realm of luxury Caribbean villa rentals has educated me on what creates a WOW experience for my guests. The WOW does not come from excess; it comes from impact.

1. The First 5 Minutes are the Most Important

The biggest WOW reaction to date was when the view of the ocean came into play. Therefore, I have created an arrival experience that allows the guest to experience the view of the ocean as soon as possible. (Curtains open; doors wide; no clutter obstructing the beautiful turquoise waters). With a Caribbean villa, the setting is truly the hero, and design should be used to enhance the view rather than compete with it.

As a villa owner, make sure to create a welcoming environment by prioritizing sight lines prior to decorating your home.

2. Create a Personalized Welcome Experience, Not a Generic One

For example, a chilled towel and fresh fruit may be present upon their arrival. Perhaps there will even be a handwritten note acknowledging why they are visiting (anniversary, scuba diving vacation, family reunion).

Guests aged 40-50 appreciate a thoughtful gesture much more than a flashy one. At this stage in their lives, they have seen many marble lobbies, and they care less about flash and more about being acknowledged and remembered.

3. Provide an Effortless Comfort Level

  • Strong wireless internet connection
  • Crisp white linen
  • Quiet air conditioning
  • A seamless airport transfer process

Although these things seem simple, they are not.

Luxury Caribbean villa guests are accustomed to effortless and seamless experiences. When nothing seems difficult, that is when they feel they have experienced a true WOW.

Many villa owners often ask what to spend their money on first. My response is to protect the view, provide a personal welcome experience, and remove all friction.

The WOW will then occur naturally.

You've mentioned that Cozumel surprised you as a luxury destination. What specific characteristics should travelers look for when choosing a Caribbean island for a truly luxurious and intimate retreat versus a typical resort vacation?

I was completely blown away by Cozumel when I first arrived here. I didn’t think that a luxury vacation could be so elegant. Luxury vacations are always associated with destinations such as St. Barts and Turks and Caicos—fancy marinas, expensive boutique shops, and rows of yachts lined up like a postcard.

However, Cozumel has shown me that a truly luxurious and secluded Caribbean getaway is not about bling. It is about size, rhythm, and seclusion.

Look at the Rhythm of the Island

If all you see is a huge ship in the distance and traffic seems to be constant, then you’re probably visiting a large resort area. This isn’t bad; it’s just different.

To get an idea of what a true luxury villa vacation experience is like, visit an island where the pace of life is much slower than on your last vacation. Visit an island where the locals far exceed the number of visitors for most of the year. The difference this makes is incredible—it affects how you make dinner reservations, how you can enjoy the beaches, etc.

Consider the Quality of Nature Over the Quality of Nightlife

Are the reefs still healthy? Is there protection for marine wildlife? For example, the health of the coral system around Cozumel greatly influences my vacation experience—calm morning hours, top-notch scuba diving, and limited development of high-rise buildings.

A lot of people traveling now (in their 40s and 50s) are looking for peaceful oceanfront mornings, not poolside DJs.

Intimacy vs. A List of Amenities

Resorts tout their amenities. Luxury retreats provide a sense of space: fewer rooms, fewer distractions, and more thoughtful service as opposed to constant scheduling of activities.

When selecting a Caribbean island for a luxury getaway, ask yourself, “Do I want stimulation or do I want to restore myself?”

Your answer will usually lead you to the correct island.

Can you share a memorable example of how you've personalized a guest's Caribbean villa experience, and what practical steps can other hospitality professionals take to create that level of customization?

My favorite memory of Stingray Villa is from an anniversary weekend for a couple celebrating 25 years together. The couple had also visited Cozumel in the late ’90s; during that time, we would burn CDs for our car rides and print out our MapQuest directions.

The couple said that before they arrived, I asked them a simple question : what made their first trip special?

The couple told me that they got engaged after a sunset shore dive.

Therefore, I recreated it.

I hired a private dive guide to take the couple on a calm reef dive at golden hour. Upon their return, their private deck was lit with lanterns, there was a chilled bottle of Mexican sparkling wine, and the song they had danced to at their wedding was playing softly throughout the villa speakers. Nothing too extravagant. Just thoughtful.

This is the essence of a luxury Caribbean villa experience: emotional accuracy.

How to Make Personalization Happen

Many other hospitality professionals will complicate personalizing experiences. There are only three steps to personalizing experiences:

  1. Ask one meaningful pre-arrival question.
  2. Track guest information (and any other details you can find) using either a simple CRM or even a shared Google sheet.
  3. Train your staff to quietly take note of guests’ preferences.

Personalizing an experience does not have to be expensive. Personalizing an experience has everything to do with listening.

Guests in their 40s and 50s do not need fireworks. They just want to know that you listened and understand who they are. When you create an experience based on a guest’s story, that is when a stay can become memorable.

And honestly, this is the type of work that I will never get tired of doing.

Beyond the obvious beach and ocean views, what unique Caribbean amenities or experiences have you found guests value most at luxury villas, and how can travelers identify these when booking their getaway?

There is nothing wrong with envisioning your luxury Caribbean vacation home as a perfect postcard, complete with swaying palm trees and crystal blue waters. The views of the ocean and beach are important, don’t get me wrong. However, after spending many years at Stingray Villa, I have learned that some of the most valuable Caribbean amenities tend to be less visible and specific.

It’s about having access – and the right access – to the things you want to do when you are there, not just how it looks.

Guests consistently get excited about the private access to various aspects of Stingray Villa. They enjoy being able to swim off the dock early in the morning. They love being able to enter a protected reef directly from the villa. They also enjoy spending hours reading on a shaded oceanfront terrace without being interrupted.

The private access to these types of areas creates an experience that cannot be replicated by a crowded beach.

When searching through listings for your next Caribbean vacation, make sure to pay close attention to terms such as “shared beach” vs. “private oceanfront.” While photos may show the property in the best possible light, ask for clarification about what services and amenities will be available to you during your stay.

The personal touch that comes with having on-site staff during your stay is one of the biggest luxuries associated with luxury villas. This includes having someone provide you with local information and recommendations based on your travel plans and preferences, providing fresh coffee to you every day at the same time, or even doing housekeeping while keeping a low profile.

I believe that the memories you create because of these personal touches can be much longer lasting than anything else, including marble countertops.

Comfort and wellness in small ways are also important. Guests at luxury villas are looking for the comforts and amenities that allow them to relax and rejuvenate. These include filtered water systems, blackout curtains, high-quality mattresses, reliable Wi-Fi so you can unplug on your own terms, and more.

Travelers in their 40s and 50s, in particular, place a high premium on comfortable environments that support their ability to get a good night’s sleep. They prioritize not the flashiest or most expensive amenities, but those that help restore their bodies.

When you book your next Caribbean villa getaway, take the time to review the guest comments about your potential accommodations.

What's the biggest mistake you see travelers make when planning a luxury Caribbean villa retreat, and what's your advice for avoiding this pitfall?

The most common mistake I see is treating a luxury Caribbean villa vacation as if it were a typical resort vacation. I bring this point up gently. We’ve all been conditioned by glossy brochures, large hotel brands, etc., and we are used to arriving and having everything set out for us. Everything is on schedule (activities start on the hour), there’s a restaurant downstairs, and the spa is next door.

It is easy. However, the private villa experience offered at Stingray Villa operates differently.

Mistake #1: Over-scheduling the itinerary. Many guests come to our villas with every single day of their trip already planned out. They have snorkeling at 8 AM, an ATV tour at 11 AM, lunch at a beach club at 2 PM, and dinner across town at 7 PM. By day three, many guests are tired.

Luxury in the Caribbean is not about constantly being on the move. Luxury in the Caribbean is about having space, being silent, and feeling that slow exhalation after you realize you do not have to go anywhere.

My advice: plan less; ask more.

Rather than planning each and every hour of each day, book one “anchor” experience for the week (perhaps a private dive or a sunset sail). After that, leave the rest of the days open.

Also, communicate with your villa host prior to your arrival. We are knowledgeable of the seasonal weather patterns, wind conditions, and cruise ship schedules. We can provide you with guidance on how to avoid crowds, but we will also save you from researching for weeks trying to find ways to avoid crowds.

Travelers in their 40s and 50s typically value their time more than ever. Therefore, instead of trying to see everything during your trip, the primary focus should be on restoring yourself.

Give yourself the opportunity to allow the island to surprise you. This is generally where the real magic occurs.

How do you balance providing high-end luxury amenities while maintaining an authentic Caribbean experience that doesn't feel overly commercialized or resort-like?

Luxury is an ongoing process for me at Stingray Villa. Traveling to the Caribbean can easily tip toward either end of the spectrum; polish (and luxury) is simply an empty shell if it doesn’t have a home, and vice versa.

Start with Comfort Over Flash

I view high-end luxury as being defined by the strength of air-conditioning systems, Wi-Fi, mattress quality, clean drinking water, and attentive service. Those are my “must-haves” – especially for guests in their 40s and 50s. Most people have spent enough time sleeping on bad beds and using questionable plumbing in their youth.

However, I do not see luxury through the lens of marble countertops or overly designed spaces. Instead, I believe in supporting the craftsmanship of local artists, utilizing natural products, and designing open-air structures that reflect the Caribbean environment.

Allow the Island to Guide You

The essence of a true Caribbean experience is rooted in its surroundings. The sound of trade winds, fresh ceviche created with local fish, and staff members who truly call this place home can share with you which beaches will be calm when the wind blows.

At Stingray Villa, we do not create scripted moments. Nor do we book guests into activity after activity from dawn until dusk. At that point, properties start to lose their residential feel.

To me, luxury is not about doing nothing, but about creating comfort while still retaining the charm of the island. If your guests depart feeling refreshed and connected to Cozumel (not isolated), then I know we have achieved the perfect balance of luxury and island experience.

Looking ahead, what emerging trends are you seeing in Caribbean luxury villa travel, and how should travelers and villa owners prepare for or embrace these changes?

There has been a subtle yet important change in how luxury vacation villa travelers view Caribbean luxury vacation villas over the last couple of years at Stingray Villa. There hasn’t been much fanfare with this change; rather, it has involved thoughtful consideration.

As many of us move into our 40s and 50s, some of these considerations also make sense.

Privacy Is Becoming the New Status Symbol

Five years ago, the questions we received from guests were mostly centered on the amenities. Today, the questions center around the guest’s desire for privacy:

  • How far away are the neighbors?
  • Will you share this beach with others?
  • Do you provide meal service directly within our private villa?

Luxury villa travel in the Caribbean is shifting towards a more controlled environment: fewer people, fewer distractions, and more freedom to do what one wants when one wants to do it.

Property owners looking to develop their own luxury villa property should take an interest in the overall flow and design of the property. Key considerations include:

  • What does the sightline look like?
  • Are there sufficient measures in place to limit outside noise?
  • Where will the villa staff enter and exit the property?

Privacy isn’t just about the property’s physical location; it is also about the design.

Wellness Without All the Hype

Guests want wellness, but they don’t want to be subjected to juice cleanses or a rigid program schedule. They desire access to clean, filtered water, healthy meals prepared by a chef, outdoor shower options, and enough space to stretch out during the morning hours.

When searching for your next destination, focus on finding properties that highlight:

  • Sleep quality
  • Water filtration systems
  • Outdoor living spaces

Also, be sure to read through the website descriptions thoroughly, highlighting such details, as they may be relevant to your needs.

Slowing Down The Pace of Travel

With remote work becoming prevalent, I’ve noticed many two- and three-week-long bookings. With the increased time guests have available while traveling, they no longer feel the need to pack as many activities or experiences into a short amount of time (i.e., 5 days).

Now, reliable Wi-Fi is just as necessary as having a view of the ocean. Not glamorous, but it is reality.

Overall, the way I perceive the future of luxury travel in the Caribbean is one of quiet intent. It is less about trying to show off and more about finding grounding.

Personally, I find this new direction to be quite beautiful.
