How to Vet a Web Design Agency Before Hiring

Authored by: Daniel Houle

Hiring a web design agency is one of those decisions that can either accelerate your business or set it back months. The wrong pick means wasted budget, missed deadlines and a website that doesn’t convert. The right one? A digital asset that actually drives revenue.

The problem is that every agency out there claims to be “the best”. So how do you cut through the noise and figure out who’s worth your money? Here’s how to vet a web design agency before signing anything:

Start With Their Own Website

This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people skip it. If an agency’s own site is slow, outdated or hard to navigate, that tells you everything you need to know. Their website is their showroom. If they can’t nail their own online presence, they’re not going to nail yours.

Look at load speed, mobile responsiveness, clarity of messaging and overall design quality. Run their URL through Google PageSpeed Insights. If the scores are poor, move on.

Dig Into Their Portfolio – But Go Deeper Than Screenshots

Every agency has a portfolio page full of pretty screenshots, but make sure you browse the actual live websites.

Next, when you’re interviewing a web design agency, ask questions like:

  • What was the client’s goal, and how did the design support it?
  • Did traffic or conversions improve after launch?
  • How did you approach the site architecture and user experience?

Any agency worth hiring should be able to connect their design decisions to business outcomes. If all they talk about is aesthetics, that’s a red flag.

Ask the Right Interview Questions When Hiring a Web Design Agency

Don’t waste your interview on surface-level questions. Instead, focus on specifics that reveal how they actually work.

Here are some more interview questions to ask a web design agency before hiring:

  • What does your design and development process look like from kickoff to launch?
  • How do you handle revisions and feedback?
  • Who will I be communicating with throughout the project?
  • Do you build on a CMS, and if so, which one and why?
  • What happens after launch – do you offer ongoing support?
  • How do you approach SEO during the design process?

Pay close attention to how they answer. Vague, rehearsed responses are a warning sign. You want specifics, examples and transparency.

Another question that you could ask web designers during the interview process is “what are the main factors that affect pricing?” This will give you a better sense of how the project is priced, and whether there are certain things that are only nice-to-haves but have a large impact on price – you may decide to strip down the project scope based on that. Before reaching out to agencies, use a website cost calculator to get a rough idea of what goes into web design/development projects and what factors have the most impact.

Check Reviews and References – Don’t Just Trust Testimonials

Testimonials on an agency’s website are curated. Of course they look good. What you need is third-party validation. Check reviews on Google, Clutch and DesignRush for unfiltered client reviews.

Then go a step further and ask the agency for two or three references you can actually call. Ask those references about communication, adherence to timelines and how the agency handled problems.

Keep in mind that the two or three references that the agency gives you are also curated – of course they’re going to give you the contact information of their happiest clients. To make sure you’re getting an accurate picture, you could take things another step further by going through their portfolio/reviews, digging up contact information and reaching out to a few clients at random.

Evaluate Their Approach to Strategy – Not Just Design

A web design agency that jumps straight into mockups without asking about your business goals, target audience and competitive environment is one you should avoid.

When vetting a web design agency, look for one that leads with discovery. They should want to understand your customers, your sales process and what success looks like before they open a design tool.

Look at Technical Competence and Compliance

Your website needs to do more than look good. It needs to be accessible, secure and optimized for search engines. Ask whether the agency follows WCAG accessibility standards and how they handle site speed and technical SEO.

Trust Your Gut – But Verify Everything

Chemistry matters. You’re going to be working closely with this team for weeks or months, so mutual respect and clear communication is key. But don’t let a charming sales pitch override due diligence. The best way to hire a web design agency is to combine instinct with evidence.
