How Do I Create an Explainer Video for My Company?

To help you create an engaging and effective explainer video for your company, we’ve gathered insights from marketing professionals and CEOs. From including a clear call to action to starting with a mood board for connection, here are the top five tips these experts shared to make your explainer video stand out.

  • Include a Clear Call to Action
  • Create a Light-Hearted, Informative Video
  • Use Animations for Simplified Understanding
  • Keep the Video Short and Focused
  • Start With a Mood Board for Connection

Include a Clear Call to Action

From my personal experience, one of the most important tips for creating an explainer video for your company is to have a clear call to action. I’ve seen too many companies create amazing videos that tell a great story but cannot direct viewers to take a specific action.

Whether it’s signing up for a free trial, contacting your company for more information, or making a purchase, it’s important to communicate clearly what you want the viewer to do next. By including a clear call to action, you can ensure that your video tells a great story while driving the viewer to take action and engage with your company further.

Create a Light-Hearted, Informative Video

The explainer doesn’t have to be boring or bog standard. It should still clearly show the features of your product and explain its uses, but you can do it in a light-hearted way.

When working on our explainer, we were told that it is impossible to prepare a funny and light video for our product (manufacturing software), because of the industries we target (manufacturing companies, various production floors). We’d like to think that we defied the odds and our explainer ticks all the boxes, being at the same time enjoyable to watch and original.

It is also important to show how your product or service solves genuine problems or is used in actual environments by your customers. Your potential customers should be able to say at a glance what it does and how it could help them. Such an approach gives your product credibility, and it is much easier to understand how it works.

Use Animations for Simplified Understanding

Explainer videos have one primary function—to make understanding your product as simple as possible. Animations play a crucial role in enhancing this understanding so that your target customers will know how to use the product to improve their lives. At ParcelPanel, we use animations in our explainer videos to show e-commerce merchants how our app simplifies order tracking.

Keep the Video Short and Focused

There is always a strong temptation to really go in depth about your company when you’re doing an explainer video—a temptation that you should resist. These types of videos should be no longer than 2 minutes and should give people a level of familiarity with your “vibe” much more so than with the details of your business.

That information you can include in the “about us” section on your site, with the video serving as a starting point. This is the max length of time you’re going to hold the average viewer’s attention, so going beyond that is just a wasted effort.

Start With a Mood Board for Connection

An explainer video should do more than explain who you are and what you do – those are the basics, and you will want to go beyond that.

A good explainer video should evoke an emotion and create at least a bit of connection between you and the viewer, so I find making a mood board before getting into the script and design to be fairly important.

Find the elements that look and feel like your company before you put words to paper and design elements on the page.
